"Mistakes, Mix-Ups, and Laughter : My Unforgettable Job Application Mix-Up"

n a twist of fate, what I wanted to prevent still happened."
Mistakes, Mix-ups and laughter

"Has this ever happened to you, where you found yourself in a situation where you didn't know how to react? You couldn't decide whether to laugh, cry, or get angry with yourself. Something like this happened to me at today's interview. Let me recount the whole story, from how it began to how I ended up in that situation.

I recently graduated, and as you may know, colleges often have placement cells that bring job opportunities from various companies to students' tables. In my case, my college's placement cell brought a job offer to my table. I applied for a tax analyst position and went through a telephonic interview and an aptitude test. However, I didn't receive any response from them for two days.

Then, my college's placement cell presented another job role from the same company, an executive assistant position, and I decided to apply for it as well. I thought that since I was broke and unemployed, I should seize any opportunity that came my way.

The following day, I received a call from the same company. The person on the line directly asked me, 'Rifat, can you explain me in detail what you did during your internship?' instead of asking about myself or giving me a chance to introduce myself. I tried to reply in a very professional manner to her question, and she replied, 'Alright, my team will contact you for further Process (offline interview).' I received an email for the interview on the same day, and one of the company's representatives called me to inform me about the interview date and time.

I was a bit puzzled because I had applied for two roles in the same company. So, I asked her, 'Which role would I be interview for...?' and she replied, 'Tax analyst.' I thought, 'Okay,' and prepared extensively for the tax analyst interview. I studied from YouTube, ChatGPT, and other social media sources.

When the interview day arrived, the person who was interviewing me asked me about myself and other general questions. I had watched videos about how to prepare for the tax analyst job interviews, and they emphasized the importance of showing passion for the job you've applied for. So, I did just that; I showed my passion for finance as much as I could. However, out of the blue, she asked, 'Rifat, I can see you're very passionate about finance. Then, why did you apply for the executive assistant role?'

I was shocked because I hadn't even considered this possibility, and it caught me completely off guard. My mind went blank, and I didn't know how to reply. I had no idea how to react in that situation. I took some seconds to pull myself together and said, 'No, I applied for the tax analyst position.' She insisted, 'No, I have your resume for the assistant role, not for the tax analyst position.' After hearing this, There were so many thoughts racing through my mind, but I managed to regain my composure and said, 'No, ma'am, I even confirmed with the person who was supposed to contact me for further process'

She then asked me to show the emails, and I did just that; I showed her the emails. She inquired, 'Did you take the aptitude test?' I replied, 'Yes,' and she stated, 'I didn't receive it.' I showed her my email to demonstrate that I had indeed sent it to her personal email address. We discussed the matter further, and then I left the interview room.

As I left the interview room, instead of feeling angry with myself or being sad that if I had known I was going to interview for the assistant role, I could have prepared for it and maybe even secured the job. Instead, I started laughing. I laughed because Even though my instincts had warned me that a situation like this could arise, I had taken precautions to avoid it. I had asked the person to confirm the position for which I would be interviewed. But alas, In a twist of fate, what I wanted to prevent still happened. I laughed because I found it so funny and silly of me. I laughed while thinking that life is so interesting, and situations like this remind me that life is full of unexpected, expected moments. Life is beautiful because two days before, I was thinking, Why is my life so boring?' And then, suddenly, it gave me this unexpectedly expected, little funny story in my otherwise dull life. I told one of my friends, and she was in shock and felt pity for me, but I laughed at the situation. Funny isn't it?

Till the next time,

Rifat
